Workplace learning is rapidly changing to a 21st-century-style learning program delivery approach. Employees are seeking opportunities to grow their personal skill set, and companies are noticing the value of switching from a behavior change model to a task optimization model. Learning transfer achieves that change of style and realizes the goal of designing for application.

You will learn the basics of learning transfer, including evidence that it is a necessary part of design. You will discover the application of learning in the workplace and discover through the analysis of a case study that there are categories of learning transfer problems that lead to actionable solutions.

Ian Townley
Ian Townley

Director, Next Practices Ltd

Ian Townley partners with senior HR and division managers to find ways to make learning as effective and efficient as possible, creating strategies to overcome costly learning application barriers. When these strategies are implemented, they can justify investment in learning and demonstrate how and why learning transfer can improve business results.

Ian believes that learning application problems are not the same nor equal. It’s surprising though, he says, how often learning strategies can slip into the common misconception that one type of learning transfer solution solves all problems. Instead, he works with learners to develop a bespoke design approach that focuses on their needs and overcomes learning barriers to deliver the promises and potential of learning for the learner, their team, and the organization.
