We all have biases. We all have times when our decision-making is impaired, even if we’re not aware of what we’re doing. In healthcare, the stakes are high when decisions are influenced unintentionally by pervasive negative stereotypes that can impact peoples' lives or livelihood. Research tells us that healthcare professionals’ biased perceptions adversely affect patient diagnosis and subsequent care, leading to poor outcomes. Additionally, leaders’ biases can act against employees’ access to enhanced work roles or career development opportunities. Reaching optimal patient health outcomes and employees' full potential will be illusive if the blind spot of unconscious bias remains unaddressed.

Charlotte Hughes is a consultant in organizational effectiveness, diversity, and inclusion management with more than 15 years’ experience. She partners with both nonprofit and for-profit stakeholders across multiple industries to create solutions targeted at improving human capital performance and sustained business growth. Her passion for healthcare diversity and cultural inclusion in the workplace and marketplace focuses on innovations that deliver high-quality, culturally-sensitive patient care to ensure better health outcomes for all.
Charlotte has achieved Certified Diversity Professional (CDP) status by the National Diversity Council and is a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP). She is currently pursuing a masters in health administration. Charlotte earned a bachelor’s degree in human ecology from Cornell University and a master’s degree in human resources management from New York Institute of Technology. She co-facilitated a leadership development panel discussion at the 2017 ATD Healthcare Summit. In addition to the ATD Healthcare Community of Practice, Charlotte is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the Florida/Jacksonville National Diversity Council, and Mayo Clinic Social Media Network.
