The word "engagement" evokes different impressions from different people. What does the word mean? Why should anyone care about engagement? How can an organization create and sustain a culture of engagement? This presentation will answer these simple, yet profound questions.

Upon attending this webcast, participants will be able to:

  • define the word engagement
  • explain how to make the case for engagement with leaders and key decision-makers
  • build an organizational culture of engagement and sustain it.

Participants also will receive an instrument to compare their organizations' engagement culture to best practices.

President, Rothwell & Associates

William J. Rothwell, PhD, SPHR, is the president of Rothwell & Associates, Inc. (www.rothwellandassociates.com) and professor in the Workforce Education and Development Program at the University Park campus of Penn State University. As a researcher he has been involved with the last five competency studies conducted by ASTD. In 2012 he won ASTD's prestigious Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance Award. He is author of 81 books and 250 articles in the field and had 20 years of experience in government and the private sector before becoming a college professor in 1993.


Catherine Baumgardner
Catherine Baumgardner

Catherine Baumgardner, PhD, MHA, FACHE is a member of the faculty for the World Campus eMHA program at The Pennsylvania State University. She is also President of Catherine Baumgardner & Associates, Inc., a consulting practice devoted to creating optimal healthcare experiences through guiding leaders and their teams to create organizations that deliver on their promise to the customer.

She is an experienced healthcare executive with more than 20 years of day-to-day operational experience and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. In addition to hospital-wide inpatient and outpatient management, Catherine has also worked with health insurance and physician practice management. She is passionate about customer service, having trained with the Disney Institute and the Ritz Carlton, and was an early adopter of customer service in the healthcare setting. Her areas of research interest include organization development, workforce engagement, change leadership, and human resources issues related to talent management, recruitment, and retention.

Catherine has a doctor of philosophy degree from The Pennsylvania State University in Workforce Education and Development, and is also a graduate of The Ohio State University, with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a master's degree in Healthcare Administration. She holds memberships in the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American Society of Healthcare Human Resources Administrators, the Association for Talent Development, and the Medical Group Management Association.


Naseem Sherwani

Naseem Saeed Sherwani has a Ph.D. in Workforce Education and Development, with a major in training and development from Penn State, and a Master's of Science degree in Human Resources Development (HRD) from Pittsburgh State University. As a trainer/instructor/facilitator, she designed training modules, delivered training instructions, facilitated working group sessions, and evaluated training activities on a variety of subjects at both local and international levels. As a researcher, she has fifteen years of experience on workforce development projects in the United States, Canada, and Asian region. Notably, she was associated with updating the 2004 ASTD Workplace Learning & Performance Competency Model: Mapping the Future with Rothwell & Associates. Naseem has a passion for ensuring that the workforce of tomorrow has the capacity and capability by assisting employers in tailoring effective professional development programs.
